Not quite far of the small town of Uis in the north-western part of Namibia, is the highest mountain - the Brandberg. It stands out as a majestic highlight in the otherwise monotonous gravel plains of the central Namib Desert. The Brandberg is a 750 square km wilderness of rock and has a rock art gallery exclusive in Africa; this large, almost spherical inselberg is able to be seen from space and rises more than 1800 m above the surrounding plains (highest peak 2573 m.) The Brandberg is home to the famous rock art frieze of the "White Lady", the authors and meaning of which has puzzled researchers, as well as numerous other friezes of exceptional quality. The two types of rock art - engravings and paintings - are found in close association in the Brandberg and more than 120 archaeological sites have been recorded.
